On Sep. 7, James Jackson was arraigned on multiple counts in connection to a homicide.
Jackson, 29, is charged with first-degree murder while armed, robbery while armed, two counts of possession of a firearm during a crime of violence, and unlawful possession of a firearm during a crime of violence for his alleged involvement in the fatal shooting of 29-year-old Christian Gabriel Monje on May 30, 2022, at the 1200 block of Connecticut Avenue, NW.
According to court documents, Monje was shot when he was approached by Jackson sitting on the steps of a church. The incident allegedly stemmed from a robbery gone wrong.
Jeremy Feldman, Jackson’s defense attorney, alerted the court that Jackson would be entering a plea of not guilty and asserting his right to a speedy trial.
An offer that would have Jackson plead guilty to second degree murder in exchange for dropping the other charges was offered by the prosecution which is keeping the deal open until the next hearing to give Jackson time to deliberate with his attorney.
The prosecution argues there is a strong probability Jackson committed the murder, whereas the defense says there’s no DNA evidence to connect the murder to Jackson.
DC Superior Court Judge Robert Okun set a status hearing for Nov. 15.
