On Aug. 19,  District of Columbia Superior Court Judge Rainey Brandt revoked a 19-year-old robbery suspect’s pretrial release conditions and remanded him to jail.

Lavel Cyrus was on release pending trial for his part in a home invasion in September 2018 2800 block of 28th Street, SE. He was released on his own personal recognizance on June 12, 2019. The conditions of his release ordered Cyrus report in-person to the Pretrial Services Agency (PSA) weekly.

On Aug. 4, the prosecution filed a motion to revoke Cyrus’ conditions of release, saying Cyrus had been noncompliant with the PSA requirement 28 percent of the time.

Judge Brandt said she revoked Cyrus’ pretrial release conditions for two reasons, the first being his moderate compliance with pretrial reports and the second his 2019 arrest.

Although the 2019 arrest did not result in any charges, Cyrus was found in a house full of guns, ammunition, large amounts of cash and drugs, according to court documents.

Judge Brandt said she believed the situation showed that Cyrus was not conducting sound judgement.

A motion hearing is scheduled for Oct. 14, 2020.
