Police last week made an additional arrest in the murder of Melvin Williams who, according to charging documents for both defendants, was killed by a single shot from an assault rifle.
According to the autopsy, Williams was shot from a distance and killed by a single gunshot wound to the right side of his head. According to police, Williams was likely killed by “a firearm utilizing large caliber ammunition.”
Police at the scene recovered multiple casing from at least two different guns gathered across a courtyard and between 100-150 yards away from where Williams was found.
Derrick Carter, 26, was charged in August for second-degree murder while armed, and has been held without bail. According to the warrant for his arrest, Carter was identified by multiple witnesses as possessing a long gun walking in the direction of where Williams was killed in the Woodland Terrace neighborhood in Southeast.
Last week police made an additional arrest, charging Tyrale Diontaye Johnson (also known as Darrell M. Johnson) with Williams’ murder. The warrant says Carter was seen with the handgun that was used to shoot at Williams and also physically braced Carter while he shot at Williams.
Both men are being held without bail as their case continues.
