A man was sentenced to 24 years in jail on Thursday for murder.
George Edwards, 28, was found guilty of murder for fatally shooting Reginald Perry in November 2015.
During the sentencing, Perry’s aunt read a letter addressed to Edwards, where she expressed the impact that Perry’s death had on the family. She spoke of how Perry’s son will have to grow up without a father, and how she hopes Edwards will turn his life around after his sentencing.
She presented eight photographs of Perry and Perry’s son to Judge Florence Pan.
“Give him the thing that Reginald will never have — time,” she said, addressing the judge. “Give him time.”
Edwards also read a letter addressed to Perry’s family, where he apologized for the situation and acknowledged the pain he brought to the family in a three-page letter.
“I am who I am, because of one person,” he said. “Myself.”
Defense attorney Dorsey Jones told the judge about Edwards’ background, the numerous jobs he’s had in the past, and the multiple letters that members of Edwards’ family had written.
Judge Pan sentenced Edwards to 288 months in jail, with 5 years of supervised release. In addition, he will have to register as a gun offender in the District of Columbia.
