A DC Superior Court judge modified the release conditions of two brothers charged with murder currently living in Georgia.
Co-defendants Dijon Williams, 22, and Daivion Williams, 23, are charged with first-degree murder while armed for their alleged roles in the death of 30-year-old Nurudeen Thomas on the 4100 block of 14th Street, NW, on July 21, 2020. Thomas was fatally shot during what the prosecution alleges to be the course of a robbery.
The two were living in Georgia when they were arrested, and are still currently there on pretrial release.
During the Sept. 2 hearing, the brothers’ supervision officer said Daivion Williams “seems to be doing okay.” He described his breaks in curfew as “justifiable.”
Daivion Williams’ defense attorney, Kristin McGough, filed a motion asking the court to allow her client to go on vacation to California for a few days and excuse his curfew while he is there. Judge Danya Dayson allowed him to take the trip, with the condition that he promptly check in with the Pretrial Services Agency (PSA) upon his return to Georgia. She did not, however, agree to excuse the curfew.
The supervision officer’s assessment of Dijon Williams’ compliance was less favorable. He recommended he be detained or put back on home confinement. He went on to recommend in the alternative that the judge impose a travel restriction preventing him from leaving Georgia’s northern district. He also suggested an employment mandate.
“He doesn’t take this seriously at all,” he said. “His respect for rules is limited.”
The officer said Dijon Williams’ alleged breaks in compliance include a recent arrest.
Judge Dayson stressed to both defendants the importance of obeying all orders of release. She also suspended drug tests until Oct. 1. Additionally, Judge Dayson will allow the PSA to impose sanctions on Dijon Williams for any verified violations in the future.
