D.C. Witness Exclusive: Increase in Stabbings Only Part of Inmate Safety Problem at DC Jail

Frustration about jail security boiled over during a hearing on June 25 in the DC Superior Court.  Arguing for his client’s immediate release under an emergency motion, Public Defender Jason Tulley told DC Superior Court Judge Robert Okun, “The DC Jail is horrible!”  Tulley said that murder suspect Jahi Settles, 23, is forced to live under conditions that violate constitutional provisions against cruel and unusual punishment. Homicide Defendant Waives DNA Evidence Testing

On June 30, Darrow Johnson waived his right to independently test DNA evidence linked to a homicide.  Johnson, 34, is charged with first-degree premeditated murder while armed, violation of a gun-free zone, possession of a firearm during a crime of violence, violation of a gun-free zone, and unlawful possession of a firearm by a convicted felon violation in a gun-free zone for his alleged involvement in the fatal shooting of 32-year-old Michael Whitehead.
