At the request of defense counsel, DC Superior Court Judge Marisa Demeo ordered a competency screening for a defendant accused of stabbing a 27-year-old woman to death while she was walking her dog in 2019.
Eliyas Aregahegne is charged with first-degree murder while armed in the death of 27-year-old Margery Magill on the 400 block of Irving St, NW, on Aug. 17, 2019.
The 26-year-old defendant was previously scheduled for a felony arraignment and trial readiness hearing to take place on Sept. 7, but those were rescheduled to Sept. 22 after defense attorney David Knight raised concerns over his client’s competency to stand trial.
The forensic screening is scheduled to take place next week. Parties are expected to discuss the results on Sept. 22.
