Defendant Pleads Not Guilty to Gun Possession at Arraignment

A defendant pleaded not guilty to carrying a pistol without a license before DC Superior Court Judge Deborah Israel on June 24.

Louis Barham, 44, is charged with carrying a pistol without a license outside a home or business and possession of an open container of alcohol in a vehicle for his alleged involvement in an incident on the 4900 block of 9th Street, NW on Jan. 1.

According to court documents, officers responded to the sound of gunshots and reportedly located Barham in a nearby parking lot with a firearm.

In an arraignment presided over by Judge Israel, the court formally read the charges against Barham. His attorney, Russell Hairston, pleaded not guilty on Barham’s behalf, asserted his rights to a speedy trial, and requested all evidence in the case from prosecutors.

Both parties indicated they are preparing to head to trial.

Parties are slated to reconvene on April 15, 2027.
