The Metropolitan Police Department’s (MPD) Major Crash Unit is investigating the death of a man who was found in a vehicle submerged in the Anacostia River on Dec. 25, near the 700 block of Anacostia Drive SE and the 11th Street Bridge.

According to MPD documents, an uninvolved witness called 911 and reported a vehicle was in the River near the location. The preliminary investigation revealed that a 2011 Chevy Tahoe was traveling northbound on Anacostia Drive SE, when, for unknown reasons, the vehicle crossed over the designated footpath and grass embankment, entering the river.

A man was recovered from the vehicle, and despite all life-saving efforts, he was pronounced dead.

The man was identified as 38-year-old Michael Jerome Dennis.
