Donta McNeil denied bail in first court appearance

Donta Curtis McNeil, charged with murder in the shooting death of Antonio Dean, made his first court appearance Thursday and was denied bail.

An attempt by McNeil’s public defender to get him released on bond was denied by the judge, who ordered him held until his next court date set for October 29.

According to police charging documents, Dean was found unconscious with gunshot wounds to his head and body at around 2:50 a.m. on August 22. A witness interviewed by police said a group of men were gambling when McNeil and Dean became engaged in a verbal altercation. The witness told police they saw McNeil point a gun at Dean, and then heard several shots. The witness later saw Dean leaving the scene in possession of a hand gun.

Following McNeil’s court appearance, family members of the victim and defendant fought physically and verbally outside the courtroom. The scuffle was quickly split up by U.S. Marshals.

McNeil was charged Wednesday with second-degree murder.
