Two murder defendants have been indicted on eight charges.

On the afternoon of April 29, 2020, Metropolitan Police Department officers found Devonte Speight 1800 block of Maryland Avenue, NE, suffering from multiple gunshot wounds. The 26-year-old was pronounced dead

Co-defendants Daquan Aglin, 24, and Derrick Kearney, 25, are indicted on charges of first-degree murder, first-degree theft, fleeing a law enforcement officer, unauthorized use of a vehicle, attempt to commit robbery while armed and unlawful possession of a firearm.

Anglin’s defense attorney, Dominique Winters, previously filed a motion for release. During the Sept. 15 hearing, Judge Neal Kravitz said the motion for release is “moot” in light of the prosecution’s indictment and would not be approved.

Kearney’s defense attorney, Joseph Caleb, chose not to contest an earlier finding that his client is competent to stand trial. During a hearing last month, he said he was still in the process of deciding this.

Kearney and Anglin’s next hearing is scheduled for Nov. 12.
