A DC Superior Court judge set a status hearing for a reopened murder case.
In 2014, a jury found Arik Sims guilty of first-degree murder while armed, unlawful possession of a firearm, possession of a firearm during a crime of violence and misdemeanor carrying a pistol in connection with the shooting of 29-year-old Lamar Fonville on Sept. 20, 2012, on the 4700 block of Georgia Avenue, NW. He was sentenced to 40 years in prison.
Following an appeal, the case was reopened in September 2019. The defendant is now awaiting a trial date.
During the Oct. 26 hearing, the defense made a request for Sims’ release, which was promptly denied by Judge Dayna Dayson.
The prosecution requested a continuance so they can have time to finish going over issues regarding discovery evidence with the defense.
Judge Dayson scheduled parties to reconvene on Nov. 19.
