Monthly Recap: June Homicides Double from May

In the month of June, there were 16 homicides, almost doubling the number of killings in May.

All of the homicides were gun-related and occurred in every Ward in DC except for Ward 2. Police have arrested suspects in three of the homicides as of Aug. 2.

Anthony Harris

The first murder of the month occurred on June 1 when 39-year-old Anthony Harris was shot on the 5300 block of E Street, SE.

Bruce Gilmore

On June 5, 39-year-old Bruce Gilmore was found shot on the 3500 block of 22nd Street and was pronounced dead in the hospital.

Lola Gulomova

A murder-suicide occurred on June 7. The police suspect 45-year-old Lola Gulomova, who was found dead on the 4300 block of Windom Place, NW, was killed by 51-year-old Jason Reiff, who shot himself and was later pronounced dead in the hospital.

Bryant McClain

The following day, 46-year-old Bryant McClain was found with multiple gunshot wounds on the 800 block of Crittenden Street, NW, where he was also pronounced dead.

On June 12, 27-year-old Darryl Johnson was found dead after suffering from multiple gunshot wounds on the 300 block of 62nd Street, NW. Police are currently looking for a vehicle of interest.

The next day, June 13, 24-year-old Devin Butler was fatally shot on the 1200 block of North Capitol Street, NW. Police have arrested 21-year-old George Anderson, who is currently awaiting a preliminary hearing on Aug. 21. He is being held at St. Elizabeth’s Hospital.

On June 14, 43-year-old Damon Bell was pronounced dead in the hospital after being shot multiple times on the 1600 block of West Virginia Avenue, NE.

On June 15, 37-year-old Richfield Chang died in the hospital after being found suffering from multiple gunshot wounds on the 1300 block of Pennsylvania Avenue, SE.

The following day, 30-year-old Arkeem Jackson was also transported to the hospital on June 16 after being found shot on the 4300 block of 4th Street, NW. He was later pronounced dead. Another female victim suffered from non-life threatening gunshot wounds. .

On June 19, 29-year-old Juan Marcell Grant was found suffering from multiple gunshot wounds on the 700 block of Princeton Place, NW. He was pronounced dead on the scene.

Two murders occurred on June 22. George Hendrix was found after being shot multiple times on the 300 block of K Street, SE. Hendrix, 22, was pronounced dead at a local hospital.

Later that day, 45-year-old Melton Grant was shot multiple times on the 600 block of Morton Street, NW. He died on the scene. Police arrested Keith Toney in connection to the case. Toney, 41, has a preliminary hearing scheduled on Aug. 6.

On June 28, Bernard Jarvis was found on the 2400 block of 14th Street, NE. Jarvis, 25, was pronounced dead on the scene. Police arrested 32-year-old Delonta Daniel. Daniel is scheduled for a felony status conference  on Sept. 11.

On the last day in June, two homicides occurred. First, 28-year-old Christopher Payne was found suffering from multiple gunshot wounds and died on the scene. A second adult male was also found shot and treated in the hospital for non-life threatening injuries.

Two suspects have been arrested in the case: Malik Coles and Duan Garmany. Both Coles, 21, and Payne, 28, are scheduled for a preliminary hearing on Aug. 6.

Ja’Vontay Brown

Later on June 30, 18-year-old Ja’Vontay Brown was found shot on the 3400 block of 13th Place, SE. Brown was transported to a hospital and later pronounced dead.
