Police have charged a man with the murder of 46-year-old Tricia McCauley who went missing on Christmas day.

Adrian Duane Johnson, 29, was initially charged with theft and simple assault after an incident at CVS Pharmacy where he allegedly assaulted employees. McCauley’s body was found stuffed inside her own car, which police believe Johnson stole. Police waited until McCauley’s death was ruled a homicide to upgrade the charges to murder.

At a press conference on Tuesday, Interim Police Chief Peter Newsham and Mayor Muriel Bowser urged residents to come forward who may have seen Johnson driving McCauley’s car. Newsham said police did not believe the victim and suspect knew each other before the incident.

Johnson was arrested without force, Newsham said. Johnson is being helpd without bail and is due to appear in court Jan. 13.
