New Date Set for Retrial in Murder Case

A murder defendant gets a new date for his retrial.  Chad Hawthorne, 41, is charged with first-degree murder while armed, possessing a firearm during a crime of violence and unlawful possession of a firearm with a prior conviction in connection to the shooting of 35-year-old Antonio Bassett on the 3900 block of Pennsylvania Avenue, SE on May 22, 2017.   In a March trial, jurors deliberated for more than a week but could not come to a decision on any of his charges. Judge Schedules Defendants Charged in Deadly Drive-By Shooting for Trial

Judge Orders Competency Screening for Convicted Sex Abuse Defendant

A DC Superior Court judge delayed a June 4 sentencing hearing for a sex abuse case at the defense’s request.  In January 2020, Jamar Tillman was convicted in a court trial of third-degree sex abuse, assault with intent to commit third-degree sexual abuse, misdemeanor sex abuse, attempted misdemeanor sex abuse, kidnapping and robbery.  Defense attorney Jonathan Zucker requested a forensic screening to determine if his 37-year-old client is competent both to proceed to sentencing and to get standby counsel to assist him in the case. Preliminary Hearing Scheduled for Suspects of 11-year-old’s Murder

A DC Superior Court judge scheduled a preliminary hearing to determine if a murder case has enough has enough evidence to go to trial.  Co-defendants Carlo General, Christian Wingfield and Daryle Bond are charged with first-degree murder while armed in the death of 11-year-old Davon McNeal on July 4 on the block of 1400 Cedar Street, SE. The Metropolitan Police Department (MPD) does not believe that McNeal or anyone in his family was a target.  One suspect, Marcel Gordon, is still wanted.
