Montez Warren was sentenced to the maximum sentenced under a plea deal for second-degree murder on May 9.

Superior Court Judge Milton Lee accepted a plea agreement for Warren and sentenced him to 20 years in prison. The plea held a sentencing component of 15-20 years. Following the prison term, Warren will be placed on five years of supervised release.

During the early morning hours of Aug. 21, 2016, at a cookout, Warren’s female friend got into an argument with the decedent Dante Miller. Warren intervened. As the fight continued to escalate, Warren fatally shot Miller, 24, eight times while at a cookout on the 1200 block of 18th Place, NE. Warren was arrested on Oct. 12, 2016.

According to a press release from the U.S. Attorney’s Office for the District of Columbia, Warren fired his weapon as Miller tried to run away. Then, when Miller fell to the ground, Warren stood over him and fired additional shots.
