The homicide count in DC rose by 38 percent with a majority of the homicides resulting from gun-related incident.
There were 18 homicides in January with 15 of those homicides resulting from shootings.
The ward with the most homicides in January was Ward 8, which showed a 100% increase in from December with 8 homicides.
In addition to the fatal shootings in January, there were also two deaths related to trauma and one strangulation. One of the homicides involved domestic violence.
Police arrested nine suspects in connection to the homicides, including:
- Rashon Hall, 25, who was arrested for his alleged involvement in the death of Joseph Simmons, 22, on the 2800 block of Alabama Avenue, SE on Jan. 3.
- Shaquille Bynum, 18, and Sean Howard III, 18, who are charged with first-degree murder while armed for allegedly shooting Ibrahim Sesay, 20, on the 1300 block of 9th Street, NW on Jan. 6.
- Delonta Stevenson, 26, and Vorreze Thomas, 23, are charged with first-degree murder while armed for allegedly shooting Terrence Allen, 32, on the 3000 block of Stanton Road, SE on Jan. 18.
- Terrance Oxner, 21, charged in the shooting death of Edward Wade, 32, on the 1400 block of Good Hope Road, SE on Jan. 25.
- Christian Arndt, 18, is charged with second-degree murder while armed in the death of 54-year-old Donald Arndt on the 3300 Block of Newark Street, NW on Jan. 28.
Police are still looking for 36-year-old Jonathan Young who allegedly shot 22-year-old Dewayne Shorter, III on the 1300 block of Brentwood Road, NE on Jan. 26.
