Metropolitan Police Department (MPD) detectives are investigating a Sept. 3 officer-involved shooting and homicide.

At approximately 12:07 a.m. officers responded to the 900 block of Rittenhouse Street, NW, due to sounds of gunshots. Police located two Black males with gunshot wounds. One of the victims, 65-year-old Eyon Falby, was later pronounced dead on scene. When officers attempted to administer aid, a suspect fled the scene in a red Kia vehicle, according to the press release.

Officers attempted to stop the vehicle. It eventually hit an unmarked MPD vehicle and multiple parked cars on the 6300 block of 9th Street, NW, causing it to overturn, according to the press release.

Officers attempted to remove the suspect from the overturned vehicle but the suspect instead brandished a weapon. After the suspect ignored multiple commands from the officers to drop the weapon, an officer fired at the suspect. Officers were able to secure the weapon and suspect, who was taken to a local hospital for non-life-threatening injuries, according to the press release.

The suspect, 30-year-old Daron Barnes, had an outstanding bench warrant for a domestic violence assault. according to the press release, he was arrested and charged with assault on a police officer, carrying a pistol without a license, felon in possession, fleeing from a law enforcement officer in a motor vehicle, possession of unregistered ammunition, leaving after colliding and receiving stolen property.

Barnes’ weapon was recovered from the scene. It had been reported stolen in Maryland in June, according to the press release.

The MPD officer involved in the incident has been placed on administrative leave due to MPD policy, according to the press release.
