As our editor-in-chief says, “we all know the criminal justice system is broken, we just don’t know where.” For all the efforts over the years, it seems like little progress has been made in either finding out what is really broken or fixing it.
The problem is you can’t solve the problem unless you know what it is. That is why D.C. Witness covers every D.C. homicide from act to resolution. We believe meaningful reform can come only with true transparency.
We do not offer policies or solutions because that is not the role of journalists. But, we can fill in the picture so researchers and policy makers can devise policies that actually work.
You can’t make a cake without all the ingredients just like you can’t fight crime without knowing all the facts.
