Martin pleaded guilty in June to second-degree murder while armed for shooting Washington on the morning of Oct. 6, 2015.

According to a press release from the U.S. Attorney’s Office announcing the sentencing, Martin and Washington, who were acquaintances, were involved in a heated argument on the morning of the shooting. According to the prosecution, “Shortly before the shooting, Martin was heard walking around asking for ‘Mo’ and loudly stating that he was going to shoot him because he had told people where his mother lived.”

According to charging documents, witnesses saw Martin walking down the street where Washington was later killed asking for “Mo” because “Mo” had sent people to his home. According to witness accounts relayed in the arrest warrant, Martin was heard yelling that he was going to shoot Washington in the head when he found him.

A witness then saw the two men get into a fight, when the man later identified as Martin shoot Washington in the chest with a handgun. Another person interviewed in the arrest affidavit said they received a phone call from Martin admitting to the shooting.
